Megavino es una feria totalmente orientada hacia el consumidor final lo que esta muy bien si uno tiene importador en Bélgica. En el caso contrario pasará que te preguntan por tu cava, por donde pueden comprarlo y tu solo podrás decir “pues en ningún sitio en Bélgica … aun.” Por suerte también de vez en cuando se pasa algún importador incógnito con el explicito deseo de poder probar solo aquellos cavas que aun no están distribuidos en Bélgica. Voila! Aquí estamos nosotros, controlando la situación.

Parece que hemos acertado con la decisión de acudir a la feria sin stand solo con el bar de cavas del Instituto de Cava y la opción de poder utilizar el meeting point. Un stand hubiera costado el triple y algo de desgracia ya que sin importador realmente no vale la pena exponer en la Megavino. Queda por decir que estoy contenta de haber ido aunque haya sido estresante en algún momento, sin embargo al ver la excelente aceptación de los belgas hacia el cava afirmo que me siento bien compensada por el duro viaje.

Sin duda es el momento del cava

Today’s debates are frequently about the speculation whether such description is actually consumer friendly or in fact the opposite. Critics keep on pointing their fingers on professionals who at some stage have been stigmatized to stiff, arrogant, disdainful and snobbish creatures. I keep wondering why the wine trade is considered such a snobbish business. Because of the way we look, or used to look? Because of the way we talk or used to talk? Because of the way we hold and stir the wine glass? I have to admit that I have seldom encountered myself surrounded by so much bullshit!

Oenology, viticulture, sensorial analysis are professions like others. It requires five years to study the art of wine making and like every academic line of work the wine business too does have its specialized terminology. Why should we simplify the wine jargon and reduce it to a colloquial tongue? Speaking to a surgeon, a chemist, a physician, a computer geek, a philosopher, a poet or any other artist how many times do we actually feel that we haven’t completely understood what they were talking about? How many times have we witnessed the scene of a patient telling a doctor to please translate the just said into colloquial language?

So, if all the other professions’ words are far and foremost accepted and respected why would and should the wine business adopt itself to a simplified performance distancing itself from its derivation?

Wine people are no snobs and if they are then as much as are artists, scientists, designers, chefs and others. Occupations that managed to put up classification systems dividing the low, from the common and the superior will most likely always underlie the snob stigma. Wine in particular has evolved to a glamorous matter, even though it is often forgotten that the actual winemaking process is a decent farmer’s trade with no luxury office whatsoever. Even so, if wine has developed in the mentioned alluring direction I keep asking myself whether there is need to make a fuss about it. Is there no need for little luxuries in our society? Of course there is as much as double moral. But then again I shouldn’t care for there will always be need to criticise something but that is also only human.

Interview with Winepleasures at the Winery

+ Tasting

Por primera vez vendimiamos el Xarel.lo en Octubre, es tardísimo pero debido al giro climático y las lluvias en Septiembre no ha sido posible hacerlo antes. Vendimiamos a mano ya que se trata de unas cepas muy viejas de los años 60 cuales son demasiado frágiles para ser cortadas con la maquina. La uva esta a 11 grados, la concentración de azúcar y de acidez esta en su punto optimo.

Queremos lograr un vino compacto, bien aromático y por supuesto sabroso. El Xarel.lo aporta al cava cuerpo y estructura mientras cuando el Macabeo proporciona dulzura y aroma y la Parellada por ende frescura.

Aparte del cava quisiéramos hacer un vino blanco fermentado en barrica a base de Xarel.lo y Macabeo; un vino delicado con cuerpo que recuerde los últimos días del verano.

Ayer durante la vendimia recibimos visita de Winepleasures quienes están haciendo una seria sobre la vendimia en Catalunya!

Harvesting the Xarel.lo

For the first time we are harvesting the Xarel.lo in October, really late but due to the climatic twist and the September rains it has not been possible to do it earlier. We are harvesting manually because these are very old vines from the 60 ies which are too fragile to be cut by the machine. The grapes have reached 11 degrees and the concentration of sugars and acidity is in its optimum.

We are aspiring for a compact, aromatic and tasty wine. Xarel.lo usually adds body and structure whereas Macabeo gives sweetness and fragrance and Parellada finally supplies the wine with freshness and finesse.

Besides Cava we are planning to make another white wine with Xarel.lo and Macabeo; fermented in barrel; a delicate wine with body and structure that reminds of the last days of summer.

Winepleasures are blogging about the harvest in Catalunya and visited us yesterday during the Xarel.lo cutting.

Aproximadamente 30 expositores de Catalunya promocionan e invitan a saborear sus vinos y cavas. Una buena manera para dar a conocer el producto. La mayoría de las bodegas pasamos de esta ferias locales orientadas al publico final, cuando es este quien al final nos compra. Es importante que el consumidor conozca a los vinos de la región ya que todos sabemos que los compradores tienden a comprar algo que ya han probado.

Nosotros no teníamos estand en esta ocasión ya que no estamos suficientemente distribuidos en Barcelona por lo cual no tendría mucho sentido exponerse si después el consumidor no nos encuentra. Sin embargo me he dado una vuelta por la escena y probé los vinos y cavas de, uno podría decir competencia, yo diría compañeros. Estuve con Mas Rodó, con Bodegas Pinord, con Gandesa de Vins, y Sanctó. Gente muy entregada e ilusionada por trabajar en lo que realmente les gusta. Quedamos encantados con los vinos y la atención recibida.

Aprovechamos este Showroom para promocionar a nuestro Arrels brut nature reserva y gran reserva en un entorno en el cual hoy en día uno compite sobre todo por elegancia.  Arrels ha sido descrito e etiquetado con palabras como alegre, agradable, equilibrado, fresco, radiante, ligero y por ultimo elegante!

Nos encontramos con buenos conocidos La Cirereta y Nico James entre ellos. Os dejo fotos del animado encuentro.

The Salon de Cava Reserva & Gran Reserva took place yesterday Monday 20ieth in Barcelona. Promoted by the DO Cava Regulatory Council, and with the support of Institut del Cava i Pimecava, the event was held at the Hotel Majestic. 45 wineries, including us, presented their most elegant bubbles!

The Showroom offered an ideal opportunity to promote our Arrels brut nature reserve and gran reserve in an environment which today competes above all for elegance. Arrels has been described and labelled with words such as cheerful, pleasant, balanced, fresh, radiant, light and finally elegant!

We saw many familiar faces, La Cirereta and Nico James, among them. I leave you with pictures of the animated encounter!

Chenin Blanc o Pineau d’Anjou, Pineau de la Loire, Pineau Vert, Pinot Blanco, Rousselin, Steen y Tite de Crabe.

Originaria de Francia del valle de Loira hasta que los hugonotes se la llevaron a Sudáfrica donde actualmente es la variedad mas cultivada. En España solo esta autorizada en Aragón y Catalunya.

Tanto los racimos como las bayas son de tamaño medio y color verdoso. El chenin se caracteriza por dar vinos relativamente secos y aromas a bollería y frutos secos. Debido a su alta acidez se deja emplear perfectamente en múltiples tipos de vinos; espumosos, tranquilos, dulces.

Nosotros lo cultivamos aunque todavía no lo hemos empleado en ningún vino de nuestra gama. De momento lo vendemos a otros.

A brief outline on Chenin

Chenin Blanc also know as Pineau d’Anjou, Pineau de la Loire, Pineau Vert, Pinot Blanco, Rousselin, Steen and Tite de Crabe.

Originally grown in the Loire valley, until the Huguenotes introduced it in South Africa where it is currently the most cultivated variety. In Spain Chenin blanc is only authorized in Aragón and Catalunya.

Its clusters and berries are of middle size and green yellowish color. Chenin characterizes itself for giving relatively dry wines with aromas of pastry and nuts. Due to its high acidity the variety can be employed in multiple types of wines; sparkling, still, sweet.

We are cultivating Chenin however we haven’t employed it into any of our range yet. So far we are selling it to others.
